I ntroduction To the celebrity friends that filled her sweeping Beverly Hills home she was gorgeous, glamorous and elegant.

And in the doll world she was known for choosing the best and the beautiful and, sometimes, the most whimsical of dolls.

Which is why her collection ranged from the extraordinary beauty of five splendid early period A. This was Susan Whittaker, whose estate collection is presented in this book.

Her first love was her teddy bear Tim. She would dress her teddy bear and play with him for hours.

T he C ollection When viewing the collection, one might think at first that there are many duplicates, especially of googly dolls.

And then one realizes, oh not so, as the method to her collecting becomes apparent. Other variations were also important in her collecting, and her astute eye swept doll shows and auctions looking for what made a doll different.

Thus, for example, she was one of the first collectors who noticed that blue wings only appeared on the largest, size 12, of the composition-bodied bisque Kewpies!

Again, she recognized that the Oscar Hitt googly appeared in three variations, and she made it her mission to acquire all three.

Costumes, too, were a primary focus for Susan Whittaker — perhaps tracing back to those Terri Lee clothes that she never had. As for her French dolls, her real love, every collector will agree that you can never have too many of the exquisite Bru, the gentle A.

For truly, each doll is different in its look, its expression and its style. And there is the Albert Marque Doll. There were hundreds of dolls.
